Giving life\nin China is not easy. Women must follow many rules from the Chinese tradition\nto enable them to better protect their child. Not so long ago, they had to\nsubmit their desire for children to the goodwill of the authorities. But since\nthe relaxation of political demands, women have won freedom, which brands can\nenjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weight of tradition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The pregnancy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Pregnancy is put forward in China. Women benefit from maternity leave of 98 days<\/a> (14 weeks against 16 in France), with an extension of 15 days possible in case of multiple pregnancy or difficult delivery. Arrangements can be found with the employer, such as arranged schedules. Moreover, expectant mothers are subject to special attention in a country where procreation is now considered insufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Various\ntraditions related to the knowledge of Chinese medicine are perpetuated: cold\nfoods are banned. Indeed, to promote the balance of yin (\u9634 cold) and yang (\u9633 hot), women, naturally yin, must\nturn to a “hot” diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delivery<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

China is\nthe country with the largest number of cesarean deliveries in the world. On the\none hand, Chinese women consider that it avoids the pain and that there is less\nrisk for the baby. On the other hand, doctors prefer this practice more\nrewarding, and faster than natural delivery. Finally, the cesarean section\nallows to choose the favorable day of the birth according to Chinese methods of\ndivination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The period after childbirth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Traditionally,\nthe future grandmother moves to her daughter’s house after giving birth to take\nover the housekeeping and care for the baby from birth. This allows the mother\nto rest but also to observe the tradition “zuoyuezi – \u5750\u6708\u5b50”, literally “the month when one sits”. Indeed, it is\nrecommended for the young mother to remain bedridden for a month, not to come\ninto contact with water (showering, washing hair, brushing teeth are forbidden)\nor cold, in order to protect herself from diseases. Postpartum feeding is all\nabout protein soups to strengthen the mother and promote milk growth. The\nfather remains outside of this child-mother-grandmother relationship, he is\nresponsible for bringing material comfort. A party (“Bai Tian Jie – \u767d\u5929 \u8282”) is also organized 100 days\nafter the birth, where the child is introduced to the whole family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The implementation of the “one-child policy” in the 1970s<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The one-child policy, otherwise known as “birth planning policy” or “\u80b2\u751f\u80b2”, was introduced in 1979 by the Government of the People’s Republic of China. As Ma Jian’s book The Dark Road<\/a> tells us, political authorities use methods that are at least authoritarian, leading to abortions (sometimes close to the end of pregnancy) and forced sterilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The abandonment of the one-child policy since 2013<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2013, at\nthe end of the plenum of the Central Committee, the Chinese Communist Party\nannounced a relaxation of its family policy, extended in 2015. From now on,\ncouples are allowed to conceive a second child. However, despite this\npossibility and a declining birth rate (from 43 \u2030 in 1965, it fell to 10.94 \u2030\nin 2018), few households seized this opportunity, highlighting the costs.\neducation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commercial opportunities to seize<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Women are\nnow more free to give birth, and are no longer afraid of hiding as was the case\nin the previous century. Opportunities therefore arise for companies wishing to\ntake advantage of this market for maternity and early childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical side<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The development of private clinics<\/a> dedicated to the rest or postpartum rest center (\u4ea7\u540e \u5065\u5eb7 \u4e13\u79d1 \u8bca\u6240) of young mothers is unprecedented<\/a>. While China was home to a dozen institutions in 2000, it hosts 4,000 in 2017. Some Western brands have launched on the segment: Gymboree \u91d1 \u5b9d\u8d1d,\nBaby GAP \u5b9d\u5b9d \u76d6 \u749e and Carter’s \u5361\u7279. On the French side, the brands\nwith a good reputation are Petit Bateau \u5c0f \u5e06\u8239, Catimini \u5361\u8fea\u7c73\u5c3c, Bonpoint and Jacadi \u4e9a\n\u5361 \u8fea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\naddition, consumer expectations focus on modernity and safety (innovative,\nnatural textiles, special “anti-electromagnetic waves” materials,\nquality infant milk), style (elegance, fashion) and support (guides , advice,\ninformation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
